General NPC behavior

Spawning

Most NPCs can spawn anywhere on the map. Some NPCs can only spawn on certain tiles, i.e. King, the zombie crocodile. Bosses in particular can only spawn on specific tiles in the map. Once a boss is spawned, another one will not spawn until the one alive dies.

Behavior

Every fifteen minutes, during the so-called tick (the same time it takes for AP to refresh), all NPCs do a certain action. NPCs generally act instantaneously at the refresh, but occasionally one may delay for a couple seconds to a few minutes before acting. Some may also perform more than one action at a time.

An NPC can do one of the following actions:

  • Move to an adjacent tile
  • State a comment or its appearance (i.e. A stray dog barks.)
  • Make a sound or a noise
  • Attack any players in the same tile (if they are enemies)
  • A Helix Researcher can use an injector to revive a dead player.
  • A Construction worker can barricade or repair a building. This is currently on hold - NPCs will not interract with barricades

Movement

NPCs can move to any of its adjacent tiles, diagonally or crosswise. Most move completely randomly, but some will seek out players while others will run away. Most can also go inside buildings if the door is open, with some having the ability to open doors themselves. Having said that, NPCs cannot go anywhere; they cannot go to inaccessible tiles (like water) or enter/exit different maps (from Elgin to the Underground mall). A few can only walk on particular tiles (e.g. Soldier NPCs), and some NPCs cannot leave certain spots. Knowing where a NPC is able to advance can help the player face them or avoid them. You may get messages when NPCs are in the area, e.g. A Human Soldier scouts the area.

Actions

NPCS can:

  • Open Doors
  • Close Doors
  • Attack Barricade This is currently on hold - NPCs will not interract with barricades
  • Repair Barricade This is currently on hold - NPCs will not interract with barricades
  • Revive Players
  • Send message
  • Enter Buildings
  • Exit buildings
  • Move tiles
  • Depending on the NPC type What they do depends on whats going on around them, they have a priority list. Examples of their options include:
    • Chase players
    • Chase other npcs
    • Run from players
    • Run from other npcs
    • Move Randomly
    • Talk

Excluded Actions

  • NPCs cannot enter barricaded buildings. - They can exit barricaded buildings!
  • NPCs cannot Rooftop run.
  • Npcs can only take 1 action per AP tick.
  • Sometimes they decide not to take any action at all.


When a player is at the same tile as the NPC, and is an enemy (the name is red), the NPC may attack the player. Neutral ( black ) or allied (green) NPCs will not attack the player unless provoked. NPCs will never hurt other NPCs, even if they are enemies.

NPCs may attack just after having received a successful or unsuccessful attack by the player and every fifteen minutes if they are hostiles.

Players gain several XP from NPCs when they land a successful hit or kill them. Upon death, NPCs have a chance to drop items.

Sound

Certain NPCs can make a sound or a noise which can be heard by all players within a fixed radius. Players will be informed what sound it was (e.g. gunshot, explosion, etc.) and the direction of where it came from. This can be handy when searching for a specific NPC. Every 15 minute tick in game any hostile NPC will attack any player in the same tile. Whether or not the attack succeeds, is up to the RNG.

Buster the Cat Just cuddles NA Basically anywhere on the map NA Untargettable NPC, A cowardly black, fat cat. **//He is an stereotypical orange cat. He was Dereks cat before the world went to hell. Derek and Buster were holed up in his datacenter shelter outside of the city, but one day Buster being the curious cat he is escaped the datacenter and found his way into the city. Derek is overly attached to Buster as he is the last member he has of left of his family, the last link he has to them. Derek figures out how to sneak into the next portion of walled off city where he eventually finds Buster. Buster is still a lovable dopey cat, but after prolonged exposure to airborne virus Buster has developed enhanced reflexes and intelligence. Buster is not immortal due to the effects of the virus, that is due to Derek.//**
